Fire Mage — guide and builds

WoW Forever Fire becomes a complete spec: Ignite and Improved Scorch now benefit only you, Hot Streak speeds up Pyroblast, and everything relies on critical strikes.

Class: MageData 1.60.1.70009By ForeverGuide team · updated Sep 26, 2026

Overview

Fire is no longer primarily a support tree: it is a complete spec. Ignite becomes personal: your Fire critical strikes deal 40% of their damage again over 4 s, without stacking or rolling between Mages. No more need to coordinate with others. Improved Scorch also becomes a personal debuff, up to +15% Fire damage for you alone: keep it up on bosses.

Hot Streak is new, but it does not make Pyroblast instant. Each stack cuts its cast time by 25%, up to 3 stacks. Wake of Fire, another new talent, shortens the cooldown of Fire Blast and, after you kill a mob, makes your next Fire Blast much more likely to crit: perfect for chain pulling while leveling.

The spec depends heavily on critical strikes and gear, and its results swing: some players love the luck factor, others do not. At level 20 it feels incomplete, and a good share of your damage comes from your wand. All three Mage specs rank in tier S at this level.

Strengths and weaknesses

Strengths

  • Very high damage ceiling
    With max-level gear.
  • Critical streaks
Big moments when crits line up.

Weaknesses

  • Luck-reliant
Your damage swings from one fight to the next.
  • Awkward rotation
Hot Streak does not make Pyroblast instant.
  • Very gear dependent
In weak gear, you fall behind.

With max-level gear, your damage ceiling is very high, and critical streaks make for big moments.

On the other hand, your damage relies on luck, your rotation lacks flow since Pyroblast stays a long cast, and you fall behind in weak gear.

Rotation and priorities

Single target:

  1. Priority 1: Pyroblast
    Pre-cast it.
    When: Before the pull
  2. Priority 2: Fireball
    As your filler.
  3. Priority 3: Pyroblast
Later, once you have more talents.
When: At 3 Hot Streak stacks
  4. Priority 4: Scorch
Keep Improved Scorch on the target.
    When: Long fights

Several targets: Flamestrike pre-cast, then spam Arcane Explosion.

While leveling: open on the next mob with Fire Blast, which benefits from the critical bonus of Wake of Fire, then finish it with your wand.

Stats

  1. 1Spell critical strike
  2. then 2Spell power
  3. then 3Intellect
  4. then 4Spirit
1 Spell critical strike
The engine of the spec, through Ignite and Hot Streak.

Order to be confirmed: the exact priority is not settled yet.

Critical strike drives the spec, through Ignite and Hot Streak. At level 20, the advice leans instead toward Intellect, spell power and Spirit. The exact order is still to be confirmed.

Leveling

At level 20: Wake of Fire 2/2, Improved Fireball 3/5, Ignite 5/5 and Pyroblast. The other option takes Wand Specialization in Arcane, but you then give up Pyroblast at level 20. With 5 Legacy points, finish Improved Fireball, put 2 points into Burning Soul, then take Hot Streak.

Buy or craft a wand for your level. In dungeons, save your mana for large packs and wand the small ones. Use Evocation often.

Changes compared to Classic

  • New talent, up to 3 stacks, -25% Pyroblast cast time per stack.
  • New talent for Fire Blast.
  • New spell; its value for Fire is still to be confirmed.
  • Personal effect, no longer shared between Mages.
  • Personal debuff.
  • +10% critical strike chance per hit until 4 Fire critical strikes.
  • One impact, then 8 s of burning ground.
